ARISE Training School

For a long time Earth’s atmosphere has been considered as a stratified medium with negligible interactions between the upper layers and the troposphere. However, recent studies have begun to reveal the key role that dynamics in the middle and upper atmosphere can play in both tropospheric weather and Earth’s climate. A vital part of this interaction is the understanding of the role of atmospheric oscillations, particularly gravity and planetary waves, in driving this interaction. The three year EU FP7 ARISE (Atmospheric dynamics Research InfraStructure in Europe) project draws together scientists from across Europe, as well as outside, in a collaborative effort to design a common platform for studying large scale waves and atmospheric dynamics, to improve weather forecasting and climate studies, as well as to provide information for civil applications such as aviation management systems after extreme events. Specifically, the ARISE Design Study project is designing a new infrastructure that integrates different atmospheric observation networks to provide a new 3D image of the atmosphere in the different atmospheric layers from ground to mesosphere with unprecedented spatio-temporal resolution.

The goal of the ARISE Training School was to provide information to scientists interested in the large potential of the new ARISE infrastructure, as well as train new teams interested in the installation of stations in their countries. For this reason the school built on both lectures, as well as hands-on exercises (visits to instrument sites were organized). There were daily poster sessions mixed with the oral sessions and best posters were awarded during the gala dinner.
